The project reconfigures one unit of a coupled house built in the second half of the 20th century in Sibiu. Positioned at the intersection of architecture and interior architecture, it transforms the existing structure to meet contemporary living needs. The entrance has been redesigned to create a direct connection to the basement. The new landing leads to the living area via a flight of stairs that doubles down as storage, while the soffit enabling this access is concealed by a custom wardrobe in the bedroom. A new bathroom separates the bedroom from the living space which was opened up by dismantling one of the existing walls.
The interior evokes the home’s mid-century origins through custom-made furniture (kitchen and library) and curated design pieces: Ikea armchairs and chairs, a Jean Prouvé wall light, and a George Nelson pendant. Walnut-veneered paneling, textiles, flooring, ceramic tiles, a transom window, and the glazed partition between bath and corridor reinforce this character.
Contemporary notes come from a Daaz sofa, Michael Anastassiades’ String Light, our own polimassa, MaNoOtTa and a-em-pe-em bed, as well as the smart-glass partition that offers instant privacy without blocking natural light.”
